Frequently Asked Questions

  • Biblical counselling seeks to understand and engage a person’s heart - the deepest motivations of the inner person. The Bible describes human thoughts, behaviour, and emotions as various expressions of ‘the heart’ (Gen 6:5; Lev 19:17; Lk 6:43-45). The heart is the unifying driver behind a person’s actions, the ‘command centre’ of a person’s life. The counselling goal is therefore not only to regulate our emotions, or to manage behaviour, but to understand the deepest desires that drive our thoughts, emotions and actions.

Biblical counselling then explores how the Bible, God’s word speaks to our heart’s desires. How do Jesus’ words, his actions and his living presence speak to these desires (or our frustrated desires)? What could it look like for us to respond to him from the heart? How could this lead to new actions, thoughts, and feelings?

The end goal of biblical counselling is that people are not only helped but are inwardly transformed.
