Pastoral Supervision

Owen Seto provides pastoral supervision in Sydney or via online appointments.

The goal of pastoral supervision is to support ministry workers to grow in effectiveness, to be healthy and safe in ministry, and to be encouraged as faithful servants of Christ.

By providing a safe space for honest and intentional reflection, supervision can help pastors continue to grow be a blessing to their churches over the long haul of ministry.

Pastoral workers face a variety of ministry challenges including difficult pastoral care cases, church conflict, personal expectations, and weariness. This is true whether you serve in a city church, a regional church, a church plant, or in a team ministry.

Pastoral supervision serves three key functions.

Firstly, it offers a safe space for honest and intentional reflection on your ministry. This happens in the context of a collegial relationship with the ‘pastoral supervisor’. It can help overcome the isolation that often comes with pastoral leadership.

Secondly, supervision offers a space to reflect for the purpose of continuous learning. It helps cultivate a rhythm of ‘action and reflection’ that leads to growth, insight and the renewing of ministry.

Thirdly, supervision supports the pursuit of faithfulness in ministry. This is where ethical issues and relational dynamics are managed in ways that are wise, loving and God-honouring. Faithfulness in ministry is concerned about the glory of God and the good of his church.

Specific areas supervision can focus on include:

  • Pastoral care cases

  • Relational dynamics with staff, church, or church leaders

  • Ministry development

  • Emotional & cultural awareness

  • Ethical issues for safe & faithful ministry

  • Sense of calling & motivation in ministry

  • Marriage & family life

  • Personal spiritual growth & well-being

Supervision involves entering a collaborative relationship with the ‘supervisor’ for a period of time – usually 6-12 months (reviewed annually). Typically, a supervision session will focus on one ministry issue to explore, integrate insights, and to commit to new actions.

As lifelong learners, supervision will benefit both new and experienced ministry workers.

$120 per session (1hr)

Finding a path forward with the support of pastoral supervision enabled by intentional reflection and pastoral supervision
The ultimate goal of pastoral supervision is to see pastors who are not only surviving but thriving over the long haul in ministry. They are serving their churches faithfully and are growing in effectiveness as they apply the wisdom gained through prayerful and intentional reflective practice.
